| Looking for ammonia-free, natural looking haircolor in light auburn? My natural hair color is somewhere in between a dark ash blond and light ash brown. (I thought that sounded better than saying mousy brown....) My hairdresser suggested going red for a fun change. I'm up for it, but I always color my own hair. (I prefer non-toxic, ammonia-free varieties) And to be honest, I haven't seen too many out-of-the-bottle redheads that look natural. | How do I anchor a half wall to concrete and keep the wall from swaying? I am constructing two walls in a nursery (1: 8'x44" // 2: 9'6"x44"). The floor is solid concrete. What methods can I use to keep "free" ends of the wall from swaying and possibly collapsing if someone leans against them too hard? I have tapped the concrete with redheads and lag anchors. It keeps the wall to the floor, but there is still play in the frame of the wall. Any insights? |
| When you say half wall, and give the dimensions, I assume you mean 8' long and 44" high, right? Are they built up from 2 x 4's? If so, what you need is something to keep those studs from pulling away from the bottom plate, right? The best ways I can think of to do this is to attach the end to something more solid - a pillar connected to the ceiling, or another wall. Even a short section that turns 90 degrees and goes only a foot or two will make a major improvement. But if you can't do that: Is there any way you can put diagonal bracing inside the wall? I'm picturing a long metal strap that goes under the bottom plate and is held in place with the lag anchors that fasten the plate to the floor. The straps come up and cross and wrap around the upright 2 x 4, forming some bracing. But it would have to be fastened securely and pulled tight, and any bends or kinks removed so that it doesn't have any play in it. Another possibility I see would be to use 2 x 6 framing, since this would give you a broader bottom plate to fasten to the floor. Finally - how about cutting pieces of 2 x whatever to go inside the vertical studs on the wall, on top of the bottom plate? These would fasten to the plate, and then you nail through the studs into the ends of these pieces. This *should* help keep the studs fastened vertically, and resist them from tipping. If you can't visualize this, drop me a line and I'll see if I can't sketch out what I'm picturing. Edit: I like Mrrosema's suggestion to put a plywood skin on the wall. If you fasten the bottom plate well to the floor in several places, the plywood will tie the studs to the plate and really stiffen the wall. Do this with 2 x 6 framing, and anchor it closer to both edges of that bottom plate, and your wall should really be rugged. |
